I know of a woman who wanted to be more active and start running. Just a little bit more movement in her life of working behind a desk all day. The thought to introduce more movement and air into her day seemed reasonable and was on her mind for more than a year and day after day - but nothing. Then a friend proposed to cut down this project to size, and here is what happened: She managed, again after a few weeks of arguing with herself, to get up and put on sportswear and go into her kitchen - for breakfast. In sportswear. Quietly she sat there morning after morning and let her thoughts wander. Joyful mornings. It was a step. This continued for a few months and one day, she put on the sportswear and took a few steps outside before starting to walk slowly around the block. Enjoying fresh air, new thoughts and a little movement in the morning. And this is how she is enjoying morning walks now, a lovely new routine. The future is an open book, who knows what will happen next.
What I truly like about this story is its modesty and consistency. It is really about an endeavor. It is an encouragement for healing and progress. There is always one logical next step in front of us, however small or insignificant this step might seem. But this step is our willingness to follow Truth's lead. Fate is not so much a factor in our lives as the decisions we make and the route we take - or the house we build. In Bible talk this sounds like this: “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built." (from the Sermon on the Mount by Jesus) It is a huge relief and enormously freeing to realize the possibilities we have. We don't need to figure this all out on our own, we simply formulate the endeavor and stick with it. Our dear infinite God, divine Love, is a supreme power, real substance, and all about good and all about movement to uncover and unfold more good. God is Good, Good is God. Fortune or destiny are outdated concepts. There is an endeavor to accept. Truth is telling us where to go. And we are totally safe and satisfied when we simply follow Truth's lead. The endeavor is really to be who we are, who God made us to be. A worthwhile endeavor and much easier to put into practice than everything else on the planet, if you really think about it. Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Mortals may seek the understanding of Christian Science, but they will not be able to glean from Christian Science the facts of being without striving for them. This strife consists in the endeavor to forsake error of every kind and to possess no other consciousness but good. (Science and Health. P. 322) Comments are closed.
