Some time ago Martha Beck mentioned in an interview, that she tries to do everything in her life, from the most insignificant routine movement to a challenging task ahead of her, with calm. The context was an interview with her about "anxiety". I appreciated her comment. It brought to the surface that even in difficult circumstances there is a way to keep cool - and the way to get there, is to be there all the time. Calm can be a routine response to everything we do, as crazy this idea sounds to many of us in this day and age.
When a group of friends and I spoke about the importance of calm, I remembered Martha Beck's comment. Mary Baker Eddy writes that "The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 506), which shed further light on the subject of "calm". When my friends and I discussed calm in more detail, we noticed that calm appears in many ways, from a demeanor or even a stance to f.e. a design that is calm (in art or bookmaking) or certain composition techniques in music are a way express calm - interestingly enough not necessarily slow. Speed and calm are not contradictions. In some cultures you see calm, order and beauty as an artistic hallmark. Calm reflects order and enables clear, consistent thought to move us forward- inviting understanding. Something well balanced and clearly arranged is self-explanatory, therefore inviting and not deterring a second look. Calm is inviting, because it doesn’t impose and confuse and I feel that people would also add that calm is important because of the peace it expresses and the honesty it reflects. Calm is honest. It leaves space for every individuality and is respectful of other perspectives. In any given circumstance a calm individual is inviting and trustworthy - as a calm design invites you to take a closer look or a calm way to handle any issue is peacemaking in the making. Being calm is an invitation because it reflects the presence of God, the presence of the law of good. So welcoming and embracing everyone, saying: Come home. Calm is so powerful because it gives the floor to the goodness of Love, the authority of Spirit and the priority of Life in the present moment. People, but also horses respond to this insight which is a divine call for a peaceful response, as you can read here. Calm is an invitation. Comments are closed.
