"We don't appreciate pressure". I heard this sentence some months ago in a family which has been helping another family in our circle of friends which needs help big time. Much needs to be done. If strain and stress try to scramble or shove, someone will remind the others, that pressure doesn't work in this household. It is a house rule: No pressure.
I appreciated this comment and could relate to it because of a little project of mine. As a means of self-improvement I try to omit the word "must" from my vocabulary. I found over time that there is much more power and energy available when I do what I have to do as a gentle service as opposed to an obligation. The inner resistance that the word "must" brings with it is simply not enough to move anything forward. What kept me moving forward in this direction is a sentence from the preface of my favourite book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is life eternal." (p. VII) Obedience is everywhere: Either to ourselves, to our work, to our promises, to deadlines or to tasks and obligations, to our gardens, clean-up operations, commitments, promised or asked for favors - not to mention the general obedience required to function within society (institutions, traffic etc.). Obedience melts into order when pressure gives way to understanding. No must is needed if compassion is involved. No must is helping if a need is calling for an immediate answer. No pressure is increasing the speed in which we operate - I noticed this week again and again how the sweet calm and peace in our home has increased the speed with which we get work done, a speed free from pressure. God is always Love, shining, warming, healing Love, doing everything for us, effortlessly. Comments are closed.
