"I have now realized that you are not what you do, because if you are, then when you don't you aren't."
This insight into the true nature of purpose is a conclusion of a healing from the aftereffects of a stroke. The writer is Doug Dombek, and I invite you to read his article A new view, a new life.
Purpose is about being, it is about the meaning of your life, and it is defined by the things that endure, that have continuity - "things not seen," the things of Spirit (see Heb. 11:1) in Bible talk. So the real purpose of life is not what we do or how we are defined by time and culture - purpose is about the spiritual essence of life. Purpose is defined by God.
It has everything to do with who we are as Life, God, has made us. This purpose is the same for each of us, but at the same time it is unique to each individual. Our purpose is to be the child of God—to express God's intention that each of us express His divine nature.
It is a spiritual law that each idea, each being has a clearly defined identity and individuality. And only God, Life, knows what this is. So how to find out all about it? Listening, heartfelt prayer, meditation, quietness. Over the years I have been greatly inspired by this little prayer, which comes along so humble and simple --- and unfolds its big impact in your heart. Purpose, the purpose of your life is good, so good, tender and big at the same time. Like the purpose of everything that has a place in our experience - everyone we met and will meet, the planet that we call our home, mountains and the sea, pets and wildlife. God has a plan. Even now.
God has a plan.
And as our purpose grows
To serve Him best,
We find Him leading on
Where wisdom flows
And work is rest.
