There is a long tradition of Christian poetry, which enriches, inspires, and at times dramatically enlarges humanity's understanding of life. From the "Magnificat" in the Gospel of Luke, over early Christian hymns quoted by Paul in his letter to the Philippians, to the canticle of the sun by Saint Francis, poetry by Dante, Martin Luther's famous hymns and poems, and thousands of poems written over the centuries like "All things bright and beautiful" by Cecil Frances Alexander, poems praise God's beauty, power, and love, and give words to the extraordinary beauty and joy of creation. It seems to impossible to hold back the praise.
Christian Scientists have been writing poetry ever since - not to mention the Founder of the movement, Mary Baker Eddy herself. The Christian Science periodicals have been publishing a wealth of poetry - weekly, monthly, in English, in French, in Portuguese, in Spanish, in German. Poetry in magazines, poetry in books. The Christian Science hymnal itself is book filled with songs which are poems and prayers. I have called the hymnal The Christian Science Prayer book.
As I write poetry and love to read poetry I also offer once in a while a poem to the Christian Science Publishing Society, and this month one poem is being published. It is in my native language, and I have attached a little translation at the end. You can find it here, on the website.
Heile meinen Eigensinn,
mach mich unbefangen, rein.
Ich für Gott ganz offen bin,
möchte gern flexibel sein.
Nimm mir, Gott, die Trägheit fort,
involvier mich, ganz aktiv.
Ich hör jetzt auf Gottes Wort.
Nützlich sein ist mein Motiv.
Verändere, erneuer mich.
Keine Rolle spielt die Zeit.
Ich zieh’ heut’ den Trennungsstrich,
bin erfüllt von Leichtigkeit.
Gott, der Mittelpunkt bist Du.
Fokus meines ganzen Seins,
ich in Deiner Liebe ruh’.
Frieden, Stille sind jetzt meins.
(see for the Herold of Christian Science online here.)
The German poem has rhythm, rhymes, and a soft swing. Here is an English translation just rendering the content for you:
Heal my stubborness, make me unbiased, pure. I am completely open to God and would like to be flexible. Take away from me, God, lethargy, involve me, very actively. I am listening to God's word now. My motive is to be useful. Change, renew me. Time doesn't matter. I'll draw the a clear line between yesterday and today, and I am filled with lightness. God, the centre. Focus of my whole being, I rest in your love. Peace, silence are mine now.
Who is writing?
